Earthquakes, Wind, and Engineering: How to build a safe home with and without professionals.
2.5 Hours (2.5 CPD)
This session is focused on demystifying the new lateral load requirements for houses and includes clarity for designers and builders. Design choices that allow the home to be built within the provisions of Part 9. Many homeowners desire deliverables that can exceed Part 9 construction; however, it is valuable to explore the value of the increased complexity and cost often associated with professional structural engineering involvement to the builders and/or the homeowner.
This session focuses on the tools necessary for:
- Completing the required preliminary review of every new house design in Canada,
- Understanding what is needed for the design of homes that exceed the threshold of minimal provisions for earthquakes and high wind,
- Knowing what can trigger requirements for professional design input, including;
- Heavy elements in wall, floor and roof construction,
- tall wall features, and
- open floor plans,
- Working with professional structural and geotechnical engineers, where a design cannot be completed within the provisions of Part 9 (Small Structures) of the Building Code.
