Putting a Lid On It: There is more to a roof than shingles.
2.5 Hours (2.5 CPD)
The roof is not just an umbrella for a home. It must provide practical barriers to structural and environmental loads. In the past, roofs evolved to include an attic, which serves as an intermediate environmental region between the comfort of the living space and the harsh conditions outside. Attics can be vented in response to summer overheating and winter conditions that can result in ice dams and icicles at the eaves. Canadian Building Codes also allow for designing and constructing conditioned (unvented) attics in response to the expectations of higher energy performance homes, and preserving precious habitable living space by moving them into a conditioned attic space.
This session includes:
- An explanation of the purpose of conditioned vs. unconditioned attic spaces and the risks of attic ventilation in energy-efficient design and construction,
- An exploration of new attic/roof approaches to lightweight wood truss design (including alternative materials such as steel trusses and joists/rafters),
- A review of component modular design, alternate roof design/construction methods,
- An investigation of how roof design and construction choices can either contribute to risks, or mitigate risks relating to Wildfire and damage from high wind and earthquakes, and
- The evolution of roof overhangs and other architectural changes.
